Day 5: Worship with your VOICE

Day 5: Worship with your VOICE

Day 5

Worship with your VOICE

“And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.” Genesis 1:3

God brought all things into being through his word. I love the definition for the word “said” in the Hebrew – it means to bear forth, to bring light to, to say (Strongs H559). When we worship with our voice, through our word or song, we bear forth and bring light to God’s truth. We remind ourselves and those around us of who God is and who we are in Him. When we use our voice to worship God His light and His glory bear forth. The bible is filled with verses telling us to sing out to God, and if you’ve ever been to a church you’ll notice there is almost always singing involved in our worship.

Why?

Firstly, music is emotive in nature. When we sing we release our emotions – and posture our heart to worship God. It feels good to release our emotions and sing before God, but I am learning more and more that to sing well you have to breathe well. Your breath supports your song. And we know that through our breath we are marked by God’s Spirit. I believe when we truly worship with song we release not only our heart but our spirit. Your spirit supports your song. To sing out pure worship is to open your heart, to set your mind on Truth, to posture your body, and to let your Spirit soar. This worship draws us deeper into God’s presence and bears forth His light in us and around us.

Secondly, did you know that God sings over us?

“The LORD your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing." NIV Zephaniah 3:17

God’s joy, His love, His heart are released in His song over us! So we sing in worship because we want to be more like Him. When we use our voice to sing we are joining in the song He is already singing over us. Our spirit is dancing with His to the sound of a new song He sings over us!

“I waited and waited and waited for God. At last he looked; finally he listened. He lifted me out of the ditch, pulled me from deep mud. He stood me up on a solid rock to make sure I wouldn’t slip. He taught me how to sing the latest God-song, a praise-song to our God. More and more people are seeing this: they enter the mystery, abandoning themselves to God.”

Psalm 40:1-3The Message (MSG)

We worship with our voice to bring light, to open our hearts and spirits, and to be made more into God’s image. This draws us deeper into his presence and the beautiful mystery of worship that we are made for.

ACTION

  1. Go to your sanctuary
  2. Read Psalm 104
  3. Play your favorite worship song, take a few deep breaths, picture God on His throne, and speak out your favorite verses to Him as you open your heart and your spirit to worship Him. You can use verses from 104 as a start and then add in your own praise! After you’ve spoken out your praise begin to sing out to Him (don’t worry about what you sound like) and just let your voice ring out. Sing with your heart. Sing to your creator.
  4. Reflect
    1. How does singing worship make your heart feel? Your spirit?
    2. How does speaking out praise to God change your worship?
